The Best Way to Travel to Roatan
Why fly when you can cruise? The ferry from La Ceiba to Roatan, operated by Safe Way Maritime Transportation, is the best way to travel to Roatan and proudly navigates the tropical waters of this area in a short 70-75 minute crossing. Passengers have the unique opportunity to relax on their journey and enjoy the beauty of the surrounding emerald seas, home to the world’s second largest barrier reef system.
Since the inception of the ferry to Roatan on May 29th, 1994, Safe Way Maritime Transportation has provided reliable transportation between the mainland of Honduras and the Bay Island of Roatan. We are currently the only provider with ferry service to and from Roatan, and we moved the Roatan Ferry terminal to Dixon Cove in 2006 after operating from Coxen Hole for 12 years. With its central location between several of the main towns on Roatan, the new facility is easily accessible and offers plenty of free parking space. We also have a terminal in the port town of La Ceiba, next to the Utila Princess terminal, for those who wish to travel more reliably from La Ceiba to Roatan.
History of the Ferry to Roatan
Safe Way Maritime has upgraded yachts twice since the original M/V Tropical yacht, which carried only 115 passengers with a travel time of 1 hour and 45 minutes between La Ceiba and Roatan. Our second yacht was the M/V Tropical II, with a capacity of 365 passengers and a travel time of 1 hour and 30 minutes.
As of August 2006, passengers can now travel to Roatan on our newest yacht, the Galaxy Wave. A 152 foot catamaran featuring four 1,825 horsepower engines with jet propulsion, the Galaxy Wave can carry 460 passengers with a travel time of 1 hour and 10 minutes, reducing wait time and overall cruising time for passengers.
